Women As Leaders in Astronomy (WALA)

WALA was started about 4 years ago as an informal lunch meeting for women of all career stages at BU to discuss issues of significance for women in STEM, such as implicit bias, sexual harassment, and more. We have since expanded and plan social gatherings, organize volunteering, while continuing our discussion of women's issues, equity and inclusion.

For the past two years I have co-lead the group. I have planned social gatherings such as happy hours and movie outings, organized a volunteer group to participate in the 50th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing event at the Museum of Science in Boston, and lead discussions on increasing diversity in graduate astronomy education.

Girls' Science Club

Girls' Science Club is a weekly after-school meeting group for elementary-school-aged girls at the Boys and Girls Club, in the Allston neighborhood of Boston. It is run by graduate women volunteers at Boston University through GWISE.  Each week we plan fun, hands-on activities centered around a different science topic, such as gravity, weather, light, and more. The aim of the club is to get girls and underrepresented minorities interested in science at a young age, and to build their skills and confidence outside of the classroom.

I have been a volunteer for the group since my first year as a graduate student at BU and was a co-leader of the group for two years.

Girls Science Club was featured in a BU article and has won awards through the Boys and Girls Club. To learn more you can check out our blog from previous years.
